PREFACE

This book is written in many languages in order to help the keen novice owner and, hopefully, future breeders in Japan and in the western countries with one of the most delightful and charming small dogs: the Japanese Terrier. Because of my interest in terriers, this particular intelligent toy terrier breed captured my interest some years ago. Although it is recognized by the F.C.I., it is virtually unknown Outside Japan. For me, undertaking the introduction to European dog people of a new breed, unknown to them, has been extraordinary and exciting. I have travelled to Japan several times and had the opportunity and the great pleasure to meet Mr. Jun Takahara, whose knowledge and kindness provided me the to be able to write this little handbook. I have chosen photographs of some of today's most beautiful dogs in Japan, so that future owners will soon learn, from working with the pictures and studying them intelligently, what the perfect Japanese Terrier should look like. My grateful thanks to all Japanese fanciers whose courtesy and help have enabled me to discover such a lovely breed and fall in love with it.
